Sustainment Modeling

In lieu of returning to the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for the maintenance of systems delivered to the fleet, the government has determined that it is more cost effective to maintain the systems through their sustainment concept. The government is now establishing sustainment facilities to accomplish this goal.

The GP Strategies Sustainment Model was derived from the GP Strategies Cost Driver Modeling process. It defines the three phases of sustainment as:

  1. Set-up
  2. Acquisition
  3. Operation support

The model looks at the process during the equipment conceptual phase and outlines the tasks necessary to accomplish cost reductions throughout the sustainment process. The article “Sustainment Modeling for Project Managers” (47KB PDF), first published in Projects & Profits (ICAFI University Press, July 2007), provides an application of the GP Strategies Sustainment Model to the life cycle maintenance of security boats.
